La candidatura di Rondine al Nobel per la Pace fa parte di quelle rare esperienze che capitano nella vita in cui la gioia si contende lo spazio con la responsabilità, senza che l’una nuoccia all’altra, ma rendendosi vicendevolmente piene. La gioia per la conferma che il sentiero inaugurato ben diciotto anni fa ora si fa in una compagnia bella e numerosa, crescente ed entusiasta; la responsabilità per la scoperta di tutto ciò a cui questo sentiero può ancora condurre, incontrando volti e storie per provare a cambiare vite e futuro.

Ma c’è un aspetto in particolare che mi sembra addirittura rivoluzionario in questa avventura: si tratta della candidatura riconosciuta per la prima volta ad uno “spazio”, ovvero il confine, e ad un modo nuovo di provare a farlo abitare, ovvero scommettendo sulla convivenza tra nemici. Rondine porta al cospetto del Comitato per il Nobel una trasfigurazione del confine: il confine geopolitico (tra Stati), che da trincea si vuole fare luogo di incontro per non essere destinato a diventare muro; il confine temporale (tra Passato e Presente), che da eredità avvelenata diventa rigenerazione per aprirsi ad un futuro condiviso; il confine mentale (della pazienza e della sopportazione), che da lacerazione sanguinante diventa cicatrice a futura trasfigurata memoria di violenze indegne; il confine spaziale (tra Locale e Globale), che da un piccolo borgo nel cuore della Toscana leva una voce che pretende un’eco mondiale; il confine antropologico (tra ciò che è umano e la molteplicità degli esseri umani), che accetta la sfida delle diversità culturali ma non spegne la lanterna con la quale cercare forsennatamente ciò che ci accomuna; il confine dell’immaginazione (tra Realtà, Incubo e Sogno) che impara da narrazioni impensate, schiave dell’inevitabile, che può avvenire l’imprevedibile e costruire l’impensabile.

La sfida che questa candidatura assegna in primis a Rondine è allora quella di scommettere che il confine si può abitare insieme nella logica della reciprocità buona e non armare in nome di una logica securitaria e possessiva: per fare ciò è necessario che si incontrino persone, culture, diversità e si diano un tempo disposto a essere salvato reciprocamente. Solo così il confine, nella sua fragilità, potrà essere generativo di vita.

Rondine’s nomination as candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize is one of those rare experiences when joy is  mixed in equal measure with a sense of responsibility and the two compliment and fulfil each other. We are joyful because the journey that we started eighteen years ago continues with a group of beautiful, growing and enthusiastic followers. We feel responsibility because of the discovery of all the things that this journey can still lead to, meeting faces and stories to try and change lives and the future.

There is one aspect in particular about this experience that seems to me almost revolutionary: for the first time a “space” has been nominated as candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. This space is the border and a new way of trying to live the border, in other words the challenge of living with the enemy. Rondine brings the transfiguration of the border in front of the Nobel Committee: the geopolitical border (between states) that Rondine wants to transform from trench into meeting place, so that it will not become a wall; the temporal border (between past and present), that regenerates inherited hate into an opening onto a shared future; the mental border (of patience and resistance), that moves from bloody laceration to the scar of a transfigured posterity of shameful violence; the spatial border (between Local and Global), where a voice calls out from a small village in the heart of Tuscany demanding a world wide echo; the anthropological border (between what is human and the multiplicity of human beings), that accepts the challenge of cultural diversity without turning off the searchlight with which we frantically search for what we have in common; the border of the imagination (between Reality, Nightmare and Dream), that learns from unimaginable narrations that are slave to the inevitable, but that can build the unthinkable and do the undo-able.

The challenge that Rondine takes up with this nomination is the challenge of making the border a place that can be lived together in the logic of a good reciprocity, without taking up arms in a logic of security and possession. In order to do this, people, cultures and diversities must meet and give themselves time to save each other. This is the only way that the fragile border can generate life.

La notte è veramente buia a Rondine. E mentre sei lì che cerchi di vederci meglio, d’improvviso appare il borgo arroccato su un piccolo promontorio. Proprio in quel momento pensi che quell’oscurità e quella nebbia custodiscano qualcosa: custodiscano la pace, la tranquillità, la semplicità, l’allegria. Pensi che proteggano un mondo, anzi, il Mondo. Pensi che proteggano la voglia di stare insieme, di condividere gli spazi, il tempo, la vita fra dei giovani, che fra loro, in situazioni normali, se non fossero arrivati in questa piccola cittadella, neanche sarebbero stati disposti a dividersi l’aria.

L’associazione Rondine ha sede in Italia, in un borgo medievale in Toscana a pochi chilometri da Arezzo. Qui sorge lo studentato internazionale dove, ogni giorno, giovani provenienti da paesi in conflitto e di culture diverse imparano a convivere con il proprio nemico. I giovani studenti di Rondine arrivano in Italia dopo un accurato percorso di selezione nei loro paesi (Balcani, Europa Orientale e Caucaso del Nord, Caucaso del Sud, Medio Oriente, Africa Sub-Sahariana, Stati Uniti), Basato su criteri accademici e psico-attitudinali per seguire corsi di laurea e post laurea nelle università italiane. Al termine del programma gli studenti ritornano nei loro paesi con una formazione d’eccellenza e una nuova consapevolezza per lavorare al dialogo, alla riconciliazione e favorire il cambiamento.

At night it is truly dark at Rondine. And while you’re trying to make things out, the village suddenly appears, up on the small promontory. In that very moment, you realise that the dark and the fog are safeguarding something. They safeguard peace, tranquillity, simplicity, happiness. You realise that they safeguard a world, or rather, The world. You realise they protect the desire of a group of young people to be together, to share space, time and life. In normal life, if they had not come here to this small citadel, they would not even have been willing to share the air around them.

The Association Rondine is based in Italy in a medieval village in Tuscany a few kilometres from Arezzo. The International Hall of Residence has its home here, where every day young people from conflict areas and diverse cultures learn to live with their enemies. Rondine’s young students come to Italy after a careful selection process in their home countries (the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Northern Caucasus, Southern Caucasus, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and the United States), based on academic and motivational criteria, to take undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Italian universities. At the end of the program the students return to their home countries with a high level education and a new awareness about dialogue, reconciliation and how to push forward change.
